4 Free Agents the Packers Should Target

It's no secret that there are still some positions of need for the Packers following the NFL draft. This team is now one of the youngest groups in the league, as only three players on the roster have reached 30 (Pat O’Donnell, Preston Smith, David Bakhtiari). Matt Lafluer has expressed interest in bringing in some veterans to help guide the young roster, and there are several talented players who remain unsigned. Here are four free agents the Packers should target in free agency.

Jarvis Landry

Gutekunst gave Love some receiver help in the draft, but the position is still incredibly raw. In a room full of second and first year players, Jarvis Landry would be a welcome addition. A player who struggled with injuries the past few seasons, Landry may not be able to put up the stats he once could, but he would serve as a mentor to the young class of receivers. If he is able to return to a fraction of the player he once was, Landry could be a nice safety blanket for Jordan Love.

Adrian Amos

Some Packers fans may be upset about Green Bay passing on Brian Branch in round two of the draft, but this might help ease the pain. Adrian Amos has been a consistent player for the Packers the past four years, avoiding injury and putting up good numbers. Although it seemed the two would go their separate ways this offseason, the Packers’ general manager gave the fans reason for optimism. "We're not going to close the door on that. Adrian's done such a nice job for us over the last four years," Gutekunst said after the draft. "We've been in communication with him along the way, so we'll see where that goes." The Packers drafted Anthony Johnson Jr., but he is still new to the safety position after playing cornerback for most of his college career. Re-signing Amos would provide the Packers some help at the role while Johnson Jr. gets up to speed.

Akiem Hicks

Amos was a Chicago Bear turned Packer, now it's Akiem Hicks’ turn. The Packers made two D-line selections in the draft, Wooden (round four) and Brooks (round six), but neither of these guys are expected to be immediate impact players. Lukas Van Ness, Rashan Gary, and Preston Smith should be able to take care of the edge, but the inside remains a weak point on the line. Akiem Hicks would be an upgrade from Wooden and Brooks, and could help give defensive coordinator Joe Barry a strong line to work with.

Teddy Bridgewater

While there won’t be a quarterback competition heading into training camp, that doesn't mean the Packers shouldn't try to improve their depth at the position. Sean Clifford could develop into a talent, but not many view him as a legitimate QB2. Until he proves otherwise, getting a veteran quarterback to sit behind and continue to mentor Jordan Love would be prudent, and Bridgewater is both a quality and inexpensive option. If something did end up happening to Love, Bridgwater could serve as a decent game manager in his absence.

None of these options are too flashy, but they are experienced players that, at the very least, could serve as mentors to the younger talent on the roster. There are still quite a few holes on this team and it's time to look to free agency to start filling them.
