As the Green Bay Packers head into the 2023-2024 season, their defense faces a number of challenges in order to find success and meet expectations. With consistent first round draft pick investments, the Packers’ fan base expects greatness. After going into the 2022-2023 season ranked as a top five defense and finishing the season at a disappointing 22nd overall ranking, the stakes are high for this upcoming season.

1. Run Defense Last season, the Packers ranked 26th in the league for rushing yards allowed per game. Without the experience and scoring ability of Aaron Rodgers on offense, the defense will need to be tougher upfront and stop the run. Joe Barry must prioritize the run defense in order to force their opponents into tougher passing situations to create turnover opportunities.

2. Pass Rush Last season, the Packers finished with just 34 sacks, which ranked 26th in the league. With the hopeful return of Rashan Gary and the first round pick Lukas Van Ness, the Packers have the potential to generate more pressure on opposing quarterbacks and disrupt their passing game.

3. Takeaways The Packers must force more turnovers to give their young QB Jordan Love and the offense more opportunities to put points on the board. Last season, the defense finished with 24 takeaways, which was 11th in the league. By building on that foundation and continuing to create turnovers, the defense can give the offense more opportunities to score and shift momentum their way.

4. Communication Too often last season, the defense was caught out of position and missed assignments, leading to big plays for their opponents. There will be a strong need for De’Vondre Campbell to stay healthy and keep the defensive unit cohesive. By improving their communication and execution they can create more turnover opportunities and limit big plays.

In summary, the Packers have all the tools and talent to be a top five defense in the NFL. If they do these things, I believe they can be a formidable unit and help lead this young Packers team to success.
