It was an unforgettable season for the 4th year Keisean Nixon, who not only made a name for himself in Green Bay, but across the league by earning his first All-Pro selection. Recent low bargain finds by General Manager Brian Gutekunst have resulted in some great success the last few seasons. Let's dive in to see how Nixon found his way to Titletown.
Nixon wasn’t recruited out of high school and went the junior college (JUCO) route where he became an All-American and top-20 JUCO recruit. After starting his college career at Arizona Western where Nixon excelled at cornerback, he opted to finish his last 2 years of NCAA eligibility at the University of South Carolina. During his first year in Columbia Nixon spent most of his playing time on special teams while playing a more reserve role on defense. As a senior Nixon started 11 games recording a team high nine pass break ups. After the year Nixon was invited to participate in the East-West Shrine game.
Entering the NFL in 2019 after going undrafted, Nixon signed with the then, Oakland Raiders. He finished his rookie season with 12 tackles and 63 yards on 3 kickoff returns in 14 games played. Over the next 2 seasons in Las Vegas his role remained the same totaling 26 tackles in 26 games while recording just 3 kickoff returns for 21 yards.
The Packers signed Nixon in March of 2022 to bring him into the special teams mix with a familiar face in special teams coach Rich Bisaccia. In an area where the Packers have been a laughing stock, Bisaccia was hired to turn things around, and did so while bringing some reinforcements along with him. Keisean led the NFL with 5 kickoff returns for more than 50 yards and a league best, 28.8 yard return average. All while not earning the full time job until week 12. “We now have a returner who they kick the ball away from”, said Aaron Rodgers back in December on his weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. Nixon was a spark on special teams and one the Packers haven’t had since a young Randall Cobb. What can he do for an encore?
The Packers needing to re-sign the All-Pro Nixon was a must. He was brought back on a 1-year deal to stay in Green Bay worth $4 million and up to $6 million with incentives. Cheesehead fans are hopeful that Nixon will be able to continue his success in a full season returning kicks in Green Bay.
